Allegiant to buy 18 more MD-80’s

The airlines continue to struggle to fill planes and keep fares high enough to make money.  October saw low-cost airlines continue to post traffic and capacity increases with AirTran, Allegiant, and JetBlue the only carriers that grew in size and traffic.

Airline 3rd Quarter Winners & Losers

The third quarter had few surprises with the smaller, low-cost centric airlines posting profits, and the bigger guys posting losses.  Some of the losses were smaller than expected, and some were rather large and foreboding.

Below is  a recap of U.S. airlines September operational performance.  There was a delay since Southwest did not release their figures until this morning.

Allegiant replaces US Airways on Wichita to Phoenix

Allegiant Air adds Wichita to Phoenix flights

Allegiant air announced Wednesday it was expanding its service from Wichita Mid-Continent Airport to include twice-weekly flights to Phoenix-Mesa.  These flights are in addition to service to Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

US Airways announced just last week it would eliminate flights at Wichita.  The airline was operating twice-daily flights to Phoenix.

Allegiant Terminates Cuba Charter Contracts

Allegiant will cancel all Cuba contract charter flying

Allegiant Airlines has announced that they have exercised 120-day notice clauses in their five Cuban Family charter contracts to terminate the agreements and cease flying those routes. 

Allegiant says that it is doing this because the Cuban charter program brings unwanted complexity to their operations that currently focus on simplicity and efficiency.

Allegiant Air Continues to Grow and post Profits

As most other airlines are reducing capacity and shrinking staff, routes, aircraft and cities served, Allegiant Air continues to grow at a comparably fast pace and profit with margins greater than most all other domestic carriers. 

For the second quarter of 2009 Allegiant posted admirable results as listed below:
